Do you see soft, discolored, or crumbling wood behind your gutters?
That's fascia rot, and it's almost always caused by water getting behind the gutter repeatedly rather than a one-time event. Overflowing gutters, a missing or short drip edge, or a kickout flashing that was never installed at a roof-to-wall junction all send water into the same spot over and over until the board softens and eventually crumbles. Left alone, the rot spreads into the soffit and the rafter ends above it, and a gutter can no longer be hung securely on a board that won't hold a fastener.
Signs of fascia or soffit damage
Soft or spongy wood when pressed
If the fascia gives when you press on it, or a soffit panel sags, the wood has already absorbed enough water to start breaking down structurally.
Peeling paint or dark staining below the gutter line
Discoloration running down from behind the gutter is one of the earliest visible signs that water is getting behind it instead of into it.
Gutters pulling away or sagging
A gutter that won't stay hung, even after rehanging, often means the fascia behind it has already softened past the point of holding a fastener.
Gaps or holes in the soffit
Pest access or visible daylight through the soffit panel usually means rot has progressed enough to compromise the material, and it's also an open door for animals into the attic.
What's causing the rot
Long-term gutter overflow
Water pouring over the front edge of an undersized or clogged gutter lands right at the fascia behind it, over and over, until the wood gives out.
Missing or short drip edge
Drip edge is supposed to direct roof water into the gutter. Where it's missing or too short, water runs behind the gutter and soaks the fascia directly, no matter how well the gutter itself is maintained.
A kickout flashing that was never installed
Where a roof meets a sidewall, a kickout flashing is supposed to throw water into the gutter instead of behind the siding. Without one, water runs straight down behind the wall covering and rots the sheathing and fascia at that corner.
General age and moisture exposure
Even without a specific failure point, wood trim exposed to North Texas humidity and sun cycles for years eventually needs replacement on its own timeline.

We start by probing the fascia and soffit to find the full extent of the rot, since damaged wood often runs further than what's visible from the ground. We trace the cause, whether it's overflow, a missing drip edge, or a kickout flashing that was never there, so the repair doesn't fail again the same way. From there we replace the rotted boards, install drip edge where it's missing, and rehang the gutter correctly once the new fascia is in place. The cost of waiting
Fascia rot doesn't stay contained to one board for long. Once water has a path in, it spreads into the soffit, then toward the rafter ends and the roof deck above, turning a trim repair into a structural one. A gutter hung on rotted fascia will also keep failing no matter how many times it's rehung, so the rot has to be fixed before the gutter repair holds. Catching it while it's still a few boards is far simpler than replacing a whole run of fascia and soffit later.
Can rotted fascia be repaired or does the whole board need replacing?
It depends on how far the rot has spread. A small soft spot can sometimes be reinforced, but once wood has softened through, that section needs to be cut out and replaced, and we always check further along the run since rot rarely stays confined to exactly where it's visible.
How much does fascia and soffit repair cost?
